Integrated Set of Information Systems (CDS/ISIS)

The Computerized Documentation Service/Integrated Set of Information Systems (CDS/ISIS) is a comprehensive information storage and retrieval software framework that was first introduced in 1985. It was developed under the auspices of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. CDS/ISIS encompasses a generalized system for efficiently storing and retrieving diverse forms of information. Its initial release was in a DOS-based environment, with subsequent advancements leading to the distribution of a Windows version known as WINISIS. The latter iteration of WINISIS underwent preliminary testing in May 1995, followed by its official release in November 1998.

The software component known as ISIS Marc was specifically designed as a data entry interface, facilitating the management of databases within the CDS/ISIS framework. Notably, the development of ISIS Marc was undertaken with support from the Library of Congress, a prominent institution in the field of information management.

Delving into technical details, the term "delimiters" within the context of CDS/ISIS pertains to subfield indicators, elements crucial for structuring data within the system. An important characteristic of CDS/ISIS is its utilization of variable field length, contributing to the adaptable and efficient organization of information.

In the realm of operating systems, the Windows adaptation of CDS/ISIS is referred to as WINISIS, offering enhanced compatibility and functionality within a modern computing environment. The software found distribution in India through the National Information System for Science and Technology (NISSAT).

CDS/ISIS's underlying software architecture is implemented in the Pascal programming language. A notable feature of the package is its support for the MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) format, an established standard in bibliographic and cataloging endeavors.

The acronym "FST" in the context of CDS/ISIS denotes "Field Select Table," a component instrumental in guiding data selection and retrieval processes within the software framework. 

It is pertinent to mention that the ISO 2709 standard serves as a benchmark for machine-readable cataloging procedures, aligning with the principles and functionalities that the CDS/ISIS software package embodies.

Worth noting is the lineage of the CDS/ISIS software, which draws its origins from the ISIS program developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), highlighting the collaborative and evolving nature of information management solutions within a global context.
